Know Before You Go

Before You Travel to Nepal: What You Must Know

Nepal is a country of remarkable contrasts, from historic cities and subtropical plains to some of the highest mountains in the world. A little preparation before you travel can make your journey much easier, safer and more enjoyable.

1. Visa & Entry Requirements

Many international travelers can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and designated entry points, but requirements vary by nationality. Check the latest rules, visa fees and entry conditions before departure, and make sure your passport meets the required validity period. You can also visit our Travel Info page for more practical information.

2. Best Time to Visit

Nepal can be visited throughout the year, but spring and autumn are the most popular seasons for trekking and mountain travel. Spring brings warmer weather and blooming rhododendrons, while autumn is known for clearer skies and excellent mountain views. Conditions vary greatly between the Terai, Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas, so always check the weather for your specific destination.

3. Cultural Etiquette

Nepal is home to many cultures, religions and traditions. Dress respectfully when visiting temples, monasteries and rural communities, remove your shoes where required, and follow local guidance on photography. A simple “Namaste” is widely used as a respectful greeting.

4. Health, Safety & Altitude

Drink treated, filtered or sealed water and take extra care with food and hygiene while travelling. If you are heading to high altitude, ascend gradually, stay hydrated and never ignore symptoms of altitude sickness. Above 2,500 metres, Nepal Tourism Board advises limiting sleeping-altitude gains and allowing time to acclimatize. Travel insurance that covers trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended for mountain journeys.

5. Currency & Payments

The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the local currency. Cards and ATMs are widely available in Kathmandu and other major tourist areas, but cash is still useful in smaller towns and remote regions. Exchange foreign currency only through authorized banks or money changers and keep your exchange receipt.

A little planning goes a long way in Nepal. Respect local customs, stay flexible with travel schedules and prepare properly for the places you plan to visit. With the basics covered, you can focus on enjoying the landscapes, culture and experiences that make Nepal such a memorable destination.
