A Close Escape into Nature :
Shivapuri National Park, located just a short distance from Kathmandu, is one of the closest national parks to the capital city. As the second-highest hill near the Kathmandu Valley, Shivapuri is a biodiversity hotspot, offering a rich array of flora and fauna. This makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape from the bustling city.
The hike to Shivapuri is an easy and rewarding adventure, perfect for those with limited time in Kathmandu. The trail leads to Baghdwar, the source of the holy Bagmati River, which flows past the sacred Pashupatinath Temple. According to local belief, the Bagmati River originates from the mouth of a tiger in Baghdwar.
This is an ideal trip for anyone looking to experience nature and tranquility close to Kathmandu. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher, a meditation enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Shivapuri offers a perfect escape.
After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, we will drive for about 20 minutes to the Budhanilkantha Temple, located 8 km north of Kathmandu. After exploring the temple, we begin our hike through the Shivapuri Conservation Area, home to over 500 species of plants and animals. The southern boundary of the park is guarded by a Nepal Army checkpoint, ensuring the security of the national park.
Our journey takes us to Nagi Gumba, a famous monastery located at an altitude of 2,330 meters, just above Budhanilkantha Temple. This monastery is a sanctuary for Buddhist nuns and attracts foreign visitors who come for meditation and peace. After a relaxing lunch and a leisurely stroll around the monastery, we’ll have the chance to explore the surrounding vegetation and take in the stunning views.
Afterward, we will follow a shortcut downhill trail to Kopan for about two hours, where we will be picked up and driven back to Kathmandu, concluding the hike with joyful memories.
